Who we are

Picker Institute Europe is a not-for-profit organisation that makes patients' views count in healthcare.

Governance

Picker Institute Europe is governed by a Board of trustees to which the chief executive and senior management team report.

Picker Institute Europe's values

We believe all patients deserve high quality healthcare and that their views and experiences should drive improvement efforts. A truly patient-centred service should deliver:

  • Fast access to reliable health advice
  • Effective treatment delivered by trusted professionals
  • Involvement in decisions and respect for preferences
  • Clear, comprehensible information and support for self-care
  • Attention to physical and environmental needs
  • Emotional support, empathy and respect
  • Involvement of, and support for, family and carers
  • Continuity of care and smooth transitions

Funding

Our principal income comes from providing a wide range of clients with surveys and other research.

Some projects are funded through research and educational grants.

All surplus income is re-invested in improving healthcare in pursuit of our charitable objectives.

Partnerships

We actively seek to work in partnership with international institutions, government departments, policy institutes and think tanks, and healthcare organisations from the public, private and voluntary sectors.

In line with its charitable objectives Picker Institute Europe always endeavours to ensure that:

  • results from its work are placed in the public domain
  • the terms and conditions of its work do not compromise the independence of the institute.

Picker Institute Europe has produced occasional research funded by pharmaceutical companies. In 2007-08 such funding constituted less than one per cent of overall income.

Picker Institute Europe clients

Healthcare surveys and improvement projects are carried out for NHS trusts, private providers and other healthcare organisations.

Research and policy analysis is also conducted for a wide range of bodies including, for example, the World Health Organisation, the Commonwealth Fund, the Department of Health and the General Medical Council.

In the UK voluntary sector the institute has carried out recent research projects with the Kings Fund, the Health Foundation, the Patients Association, the Healing Foundation, Help the Aged, and cancer charities.

In addition the Picker Institute runs a National NHS Patient Survey Co-ordination Centre in England on behalf of the Care Quality Commission.
