Survey co-ordination

Picker Institute Europe can advise healthcare organisations in Europe on how to establish programmes systematically to gather and assess patient and service user feedback.

For the NHS in England Picker Institute Europe develops and co-ordinates large scale surveys, with up to 140,000 patients in the sample, applying a consistent methodology across over 150 healthcare provider sites and a range of survey contractors.

Our theoretical knowledge and practical experience of these methods enable us to help any organisation that is seeking to gather patient experience to initiate new co-ordinated programmes.

Surveying patients who use Bupa services

Bupa, a private healthcare insurer, has commissioned Picker Institute Europe to carry out a monthly survey of patients attending 200 hospitals in the UK. The postal questionnaire, designed and tested by Picker Institute Europe, is sent to patients shortly after their hospital visit. Quarterly reports provide Bupa with data which they use to evaluate the performance of hospitals and hospital providers.

Italy: Veneto region

Picker Institute Europe has been helping the regional government's health department to develop and pilot an inpatient survey. The government wanted indicators that would be comparable with England.

Picker Institute Europe, which has developed and co-ordinated the English national inpatient survey every year since 2002, worked with patient, professional and stakeholder groups in Veneto to produce a relevant and cognitively tested survey using a closely similar set of questions to the English one, but translated into the Italian language and context.

Following the initial pilot and further fine tuning, it is hoped that this will be rolled out across the region's hospitals.
