Quality improvement services
The services are tailored to the specific needs of the healthcare client - their service users, priorities and issues under consideration. They can include:
Training and advice
Training and advice is available to help healthcare staff understand the principles of patient feedback and how to plan action for improvement. Each activity is tailored to the audience the client wishes to reach - whether it be board members, front line staff, senior managers, volunteers, patients or other groups unique to the organisation.
Workshops, presentations and events
Events are designed around the needs of the client and can include:
- the opportunity to examine and discuss key findings
- assistance in interpreting data
- reflection on key issues and challenges
- identification of priorities for improvement
- advice on sharing and disseminating results
- devising effective approaches to action planning.
A tried and tested improvement programme: Patients Accelerating Change*
The basis of the programme includes:
- training, workshops and learning days
- resource materials
- tools and techniques to support user involvement and better outcomes
- ongoing support and advice from Picker Institute staff.
Patient and public engagement action planning programmes
Programmes can be developed to support staff in directly involving patients and the public in quality improvement.
The benefits include:
- real improvements as defined and designed by patients
- active involvement of patients in service development
- effective use of patient survey results and other patient feedback
- practical support for implementing and demonstrating measurable change
- linking policy with practice
- developing innovative practice
- simple, low-cost solutions inspired by patients that make real impact.
Indepth analysis
Experienced researchers can assist in examining and interpreting patient feedback. This may include analysing survey results by ethnic group, age, gender, or department, for instance, or collating focus group feedback to help identify the main themes and trends.
*The programme was jointly developed with the former NHS National Clinical Governance Support Team.
