Patient and public engagement
Although 'patient and public engagement' (PPE) is used within the UK as a single term, the needs and expectations of patients and citizens are often quite distinct. PPE should be used with care, and the engagement methods tailored to specific objectives.
How we can help
PPE in commissioning and service design
Consulting patients and the public about the collective provision and design of healthcare services means exploring the needs and priorities of the local community, to ensure that there is legitimacy and accountability for service decisions.
The Picker Institute works with commissioners to establish PPE strategies, carry out population surveys, surveys of people with specific conditions, public consultations, and in-depth qualitative research to gather people's views and experiences.
It also works extensively with service providers to use patient experience measurement, other patient feedback, and patient engagment for quality improvement.
Engaging patients in their own care
Individual patients are largely interested in being engaged in their own care and treatment. What matters most to them is the quality of their interactions with healthcare professionals, and their involvement in decisions.
The Picker Institute has carried out extensive research into what patients want from healthcare, and what works to support them in achieving engagement in care.
