History and key documents

The Health and Social Care Act received Royal Assent on 22 July 2008. The Act began as the Health and Social Care Bill 2007, which was introduced to Parliament on 15 November.

The Health and Social Care Bill 2007 and other documents that describe the Bill's progress through Parliament, including Bill drafts, records of Commons' and Lords' Reading and Committee debates and the amendment papers, are all available on the parliament UK website.

Picker Institute Europe documents

Much of Picker Institute Europe's work to amend the Health and Social Care Bill involved meetings and negotiations with other organisations, Parliamentarians and members of the Department of Health team responsible for drafting the Bill. We also produced three briefing documents to inform Parliamentary debates:

2006: Preliminary consultation

From November 2006 to February 2007 the Department of Health ran a consultation on The Future Regulation of Health and Adult Social Care in England.

The government published its formal response to the consultation in October 2007.
